SIMPLY THE VEST
+++ Victorious Hemmant forgets kit +++
Unassuming and courteous off the bike, yet liable to attack aggressively in a competitive situation, the Jekyll and Hyde character of TOM ‘HUMBLE’ HEMMANT has been apparent to this publication for many years – so it is appropriate that Dynamo’s quiet man took a ride on the Wildside at the Bec CC after a rummage in his kit bag prior to the E/1/2/3 event confirmed a well-documented shortcoming in his packing skills. Referring to an infamous incident where LUCY ‘DANCING’ DOVE had to dash back home before a race to get his shorts, the St Margarets man pointed out to IAN ‘KING OF’ PAINE that his long-suffering partner had forced him to pack an extra pair for Sunday’s 78-mile contest on the Lingfield circuit in Surrey – but Tom’s pride at the foresighted action dissolved when it became apparent he had forgotten to bring a jersey this time. With Lucy not present to bail him out, it looked like the absent-minded ‘Mo would be racing in his string vest, until a kindly competitor from another team saved the day – and so it came to pass that one of Dynamo’s top riders crossed the line in 1st place with “Wildside RT” proudly emblazoned across his chest. Let’s hope club sponsors Cyclefit, who also provide Tom with his much-loved Serotta, don’t look too unfavourably at missing out on the exposure! Hemmant’s path to victory began as he attacked on the first lap to reach a two-man break. Ian reached the expanded group later on and took 3rd… http://tinyurl.com/4o6jg3 …after Tom stayed with Andy Lyons’ attack on the short, steep Holtye climb. The impressive victory was one of an incredible six Dynamo wins in as many days – a club record that coincided with the DYNAMITE! Dyna-mail system going into total meltdown. So come with us now as we sift through a backlog of jubilant messages to re-live the heady excitement of the past week. Prepare for won hell of a ride…
THE JOY OF SIX
+++ Half-a-dozen heroes thrash rivals +++
Dynamo’s vanload of victories began last week with back-on-form MARTIN ‘PIN-UP’ WILLIAMSON taking 1st place at the Hounslow Wheelers’ Thursday night time trial, where he completed the lumpy 10-mile Chertsey course in 22:29… http://tinyurl.com/6r8gd2 …and earned appreciative nods from the red-and-white club’s old dudes in the process. Respect! Two days later, PAUL ‘MONTY’ DELAHUNTY rocketed out of the final corner at the Chertsey MoD circuit and into the top spot of the E/1/2 race as he valiantly held off the pack on the long finishing straight. Winning by an even more impressive margin, MARK ‘NUTTY BOY’ DRAYTON soloed away on lap five of the Hillingdon 4th cat event on Tuesday, much to the astonishment of 6th-placed ROB ‘HAPPY, HAPPY’ HARROLD… http://tinyurl.com/4lnhcr …who heard that his pal had eaten a cake containing nuts before the race despite being allergic to them. Perhaps he was just whizzing around the West London circuit in the hope he could locate a doctor! Meanwhile, over at Crystal Palace, winner RICHARD ‘HAVE IT’ HOULT led the Dynamo domination of the 3/4 race which saw STUART ‘EASY’ SPIES nab 2nd, TONY ‘PETER’ SMEDLEY take 4th, ROB ‘THE SAINT’ JEFFROY in 6th place and JASON ‘WILLS’ GREEN 7th. Crit queen CHARLIE ‘VICI’ BLACKMAN continued her unbeaten run in the women’s race after taking 9th in Olveston, Glos, on Sunday… http://tinyurl.com/6ycalm …but spare a thought for Palace E/1/2 regular IAN ‘KING OF’ PAINE, beaten into 2nd place by his nemesis, “Corridori Kid” Eric Rowsell. Taking issue with the official results, unlisted TOM ‘HUMBLE’ HEMMANT points out that he finished one place behind 5th-placed GUY ‘THE ENGINE’ POWDRILL, although RICHARD ‘PLACING’ MASON’s No10 spot doesn’t seem to be in doubt… http://tinyurl.com/3erphz. What a relief!
GIN AND BEAR IT
+++ Hayter’s tip for ailment +++
Ingenious imbiber WILL ‘SEE YA’ HAYTER claims to have discovered the perfect antidote to cramp in the form of a gin and tonic combined with salt and vinegar crisps – although he points out that they must both be taken the night before the race, not during it, as DAVID ‘PINKY’ GARDNER might be tempted to do. Will shall no doubt be glugging back his cure when he once again hosts the Dyna-monthly drinks evening, which has been steadily growing in popularity since its inception back in February. Those ‘Mos who head to the Freemason’s Arms in Wandsworth… http://tinyurl.com/398sbx …on Thursday 29th May might also get to hear details about Will’s adventure at the Tour of the Milburys in Meonstoke, Hants, on Saturday with JOE ‘BLOW’ HEMMANT and RICHARD ‘PLACING’ MASON. The lanky lad says of the two-stage, 2/3/4 event: “Joe came 4th in the four-mile time trial, and Rich would have come 5th, but he missed his start by 20 seconds and dropped to 9th. We then had a good road race, with Rich in an early break which ended up coming back, and Joe doing some excellent work to close down a late breakaway. A cheeky junior from GWR sneaked away at the death for the win, benefiting from the time bonuses to win on GC as well. Ben Wilson also sneaked a few bonus seconds along the way to jump into 3rd. So the end result was 4th on GC for me, 5th for Joe and 8th for Rich.” That, fellas… http://tinyurl.com/3mhjml ….is an excellent result all round! Venturing to Bellsyew in Kent the very next day, exhausted Will battled to hang on at SERRL’s 2/3/4 event on the Lamberhurst/Frant circuit, yet still managed to sneak into the top 10 on the final climb by nabbing 9th place… http://tinyurl.com/4k3h8k. Get that man a well-deserved G and T, Dynamates!
…AND A FEW ‘MO THINGS…
+++ Fully-recovered club boss TONY ‘PETER’ SMEDLEY 2nd at MoD 3rd cat race on Saturday, with STUART ‘EASY’ SPIES 4th and CHRISTIAN ‘HARDCASTLE’ CORMACK 10th… http://tinyurl.com/3m2m3k +++ Another personal best for JENNY ‘J-LLOYD’ JONES – 2:05:17 at the Charlotteville CC ’50’, followed by 3rd in the 4th round of the National Rudy Project Time Trial series in Newmarket +++
STEPPING DOWN
The view from the top of the podium is always a pleasurable one, but as we pause to thank everyone who sent in stuff for this issue, Dynamo must now relinquish its unofficial title as Britain’s Most Winningest Club (8th to 13th May 2008 only) and take its place once more among ordinary cycling mortals. Always remember we are a fulsome bouquet, but we would be quite pointless without you, our wonderful winners. So please keep Dyna-mailing your race reports, news and gossip to dynamite@londondynamo.co.uk. The deadline, as ever, is Wednesday afternoon for Friday’s edition. And now, as we all take one last, long sniff at those sweet flowers, it only remains for us to remind you about…
