HIGH IN-TENTS-ITY
+++ Hayter’s team makes top 10 in MTB campathon +++
This publication’s editorial team likes to think of itself as a wake-up call to the hundreds of Dynamates who, like yourself, may be feeling run down by a hard week at work – so we were somewhat disappointed when a group of mountain-biking ‘Mos gave us a series of zombie-like stares on Sunday after we had delivered a buoyant, breezy, Debbie Reynolds-style “good mornin'”… http://tinyurl.com/648vcv …at a campsite in Ledbury, Herefordshire. Admittedly, the fellas had been up all night doing the Giant Mountain Mayhem 24-hour race, whereas we were off to do the pleasant 62-mile Mayhem Classic sportive through the Malverns, leaving our chums huddling over the ashen remains of a depleted barbecue in their wind-battered For Goodness Shakes gazebo – half of which had been dismantled just before DYNAMITE! witnessed three or four similar structures nearby attempting to take flight. The three Dynamo teams had also endured a steady supply of rain, culminating in a downpour around midnight which saw their lap times for the eight-mile circuit increase from 45 minutes to more than two hours as the mud-strewn off-camber sections became nearly impossible to walk across, let alone ride. And Dynamo’s dark night of the soul can best be summed up by DAVID ‘DORIAN’ STREULE’s comment to South African “ringer” Alistair Paterson who had brought his spouse and a camper van to the event: “Your warm bed and a warm wife are looking very tempting right now.” Thankfully, the baby-faced Blackpoolian managed to stay in his tent with younger brother Mike – and as the sun finally came out on Sunday afternoon for the close of the race, trip organiser WILL ‘SEE YA’ HAYTER witnessed his exhausted team-mate STUART ‘EASY’ SPIES arrive at the finishing pen just four minutes before the 2pm cut-off time, thereby enabling sleep-refreshed single-speeder MARTIN ‘PIN-UP’ WILLIAMSON to propel the Dynamo ‘A’ squad into 9th place among the 248-strong list of Sport teams as he completed their 25th lap. Great work, chaps! Their team-mate CHRIS ‘VAN CHADDERS’ CHAPMAN sustained a nasty-looking gash on his right leg when he hit a pair of back-markers early Saturday evening before smashing his helmet on a low-hanging branch the next day. But heading the injury list was STEVE ‘FINGERS’ FARDELL, who bowed out on lap six due to a hand injury, leaving MICHAEL ‘LUNGER’ SNEYD, Mike Streule and Alistair to soldier on to become the 115th-placed Sport team. The Dynamo ‘B’ squad – RUSSELL ‘RUSTY’ SHORT, MATT ‘IRON’ BRIDGE, Matt’s mate Andy Geall from up north and Dave – were a fantastic 15th in the same category. You can take a look at some of the madness for yourself by visiting our online gallery… http://tinyurl.com/56s3tl …but for now, let’s take a sojourn in the relatively sane world of stage racing. It’s time for a Dynamo double…
THE MAILLOT JAUNTS
+++ Two stage wins and GC triumph for Dynamo +++
Victory in the opening eight-mile time trial, courtesy of GUY ‘THE ENGINE’ POWDRILL, followed by RICHARD ‘AV IT’ HOULT taking 1st place in the next day’s road stage meant that this year’s Pearson Jaunts 5-Day event provided the platform for one of Dynamo’s best-ever performances in a stage race – and the Dynamatic domination of the Surrey League showdown was cemented by Rich easily topping the final GC thanks to the time gap secured by his victory on Saturday. That, fellas, is Dyn-amazing stuff! On the day that RICHARD ‘PLACING’ MASON took 4th, have-a-go Hoult pulled on the yellow jersey after riding across to the leader and soloing to the chequered flag in Bletchingly almost a minute ahead of him. The third stage on Sunday saw the ‘Mos pull back a long Dulwich Paragon break on the Ockley circuit before Mason and Powdrill took 2nd and 3rd respectively on the super-tough off-course Leith Hill finish. Guy ended up taking 3rd place overall… http://tinyurl.com/3sea4y …but disappointment was provided by the pesky puncture fairy, who stuck her beak into one of Rich Mason’s tyres before he had made it out of the neutralised zone on the final day – and he never joined the race on the Ladies Mile circuit due to traffic. Oh cruel, cruel fate! Tester RICHARD ‘WIN ‘EM’ SIMMONDS added to one of the most successful weeks in Dynamo history and rounded off his national champs season in the process by landing 11th place at the RTTC Championship ’50’ in Dishforth, North Yorks. The TT master clocked 01:45:48 on Sunday… http://tinyurl.com/4yjx7d …while his missus finished 10th in the women’s competition with an impressive time of 2:00:38… http://tinyurl.com/4yjx7d. Have a well-deserved rest, both of you!
MEAT YOUR MATCH
+++ Streule gets £95 burger in bet deal +++
Like an urban Superman, investment banker DAVID ‘DORIAN’ STREULE was recently seen performing an ultra-fast change from business suit to baggy shorts as he transformed himself into Captain Courier for three peckish workpals who fancied trying out – we kid you not – a hamburger costing just under a hundred notes… http://tinyurl.com/6qpumf. The big-spending trio bet each other on whether Dave could cycle from their firm’s Fleet Street HQ to Burger King’s Gloucester Road branch in less than 18 minutes and guaranteed he would get a free burger whether he made it in the designated time or not. Those who know speedy Streule won’t be surprised to learn that he completed the trip in 13 minutes – and equally unsurprisingly, he reports that the taste experience was “nice, but I wouldn’t pay £95 for it”. So you could say it was hardly worth the time and truffles! Speaking of unusual sartorial transformations, which we were at the beginning of this item, it seems that Streuley’s former colleague GUY ‘THE ENGINE’ POWDRILL ran the risk of being sectioned on Sunday night when he wandered shoeless along the streets of Morden and caught a Tube dressed in just his socks and Dynamo kit. It turns out that the hapless big fella’s car keys had jumped out of his back pocket during the third stage of the 5-Day, prompting him to cadge a lift from race organiser Gary Pearson, who dumped underdressed Guysie on the streets of south London – but despite the stares from passers-by, he made it back to his flat in the Oval in one piece. Tuck your keys in your Sidis next time, buddy!
…AND A FEW ‘MO THINGS…
+++ REBECCA ‘WHIRLIGIG’ CURLEY 3rd and SUSANNAH ‘GUNDOLA’ OSBORNE 8th in Women’s Series Twickenham event on Windlesham circuit… http://tinyurl.com/6rkvx8 +++ TOM ‘HUMBLE’ HEMMANT 2nd at Crystal Palace E/1/2 race on Tuesday, with IAN ‘KING OF’ PAINE taking 10th… http://tinyurl.com/5e9r32 +++
