IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BIKE
+++ Humpheson praises ‘vintage’ machine +++
He was turned away from the world championships in Stuttgart because of his drug-tainted past – but Eddy Merckx has proved to be very much part of cycling’s present following SAM ‘SLAM DUNK’ HUMPHESON’s promotion to 1st cat on Sunday, which he achieved on one of the Belgian hero’s bikes. The pleased-as-punch points-grabber, who was 8th at the 1/2/3 Finsbury Park Road Race in Steeple, Essex, says: “I would like to say a special thanks to Mr Byron McKensie who knocked me off my bike on my way back from Crystal Palace on 19th June, destroying my Seven titanium wonder bike and forcing me back onto the trusty aluminium Merckx which is now five years old. The results speak for themselves. Points gained prior to accident: 16. After: 157. You can see why the Hemmants love their Ribbles. That fancy Serotta was the worst thing that could’ve happened to Tom.” You can’t argue with those statistics! For his final outing as a 2nd cat, Sam got into the only significant break of the day, which stayed away for 15 miles of the 78-mile race before the five riders were caught with a lap-and-a-half to go. The Herne Hill hero calmly sat in, let Ipswich BC’s Philip Hetzel get away on his own to win, and then waited for the uphill finish to bag a top 10 place in the band 2 event, which gave him almost twice as many points than he needed… http://tinyurl.com/2kjzmw. Well done, sir! Sam adds: “I’m now entering a period of intense training for the club champs where I’m going to win easily.” He’s going to have a tough time living up to that boast if a certain cyclo-crossing sensation has anything to do with it – so come with us for a quick explanation. It’s time for a Short story…

GREAT DEERS LEAP FORWARD
+++ Short’s top five place on Sussex cross circuit +++
Dyna-modest RUSSELL ‘RUSTY’ SHORT has been characteristically quiet after bagging 4th place at the 3rd round of the London Cross League in East Grinstead, West Sussex, on Sunday… http://tinyurl.com/2fpewp …but we insisted that the small wonder explained the secret of how he got a top five place on the Deers Leap Park circuit. Rusty revealed: “The course just suited me – hilly with lots of technical sections, very different to the first round where we were just on flat grass fields. I did quite a bit of mountain biking before the season started to improve my skills. Let’s
hope I have the same success for the rest of the rounds.” Fingers crossed, little fella!

A LITTLE KIT MORE
+++ One-off clothing sale tonight +++
Rusty’s busy buddy PAUL ‘CANNONBALL’ CALLINAN has been flooded with requests from clothing-hungry members eager to get their hands on the club’s snazzy blue, black and orange vestments before the club champs sale on Saturday 3rd November – so the honorary club president is taking time out of his hectic schedule to flog some kit at Norbiton station, where the stock is currently stored. He’ll be there at 8.30 this evening with the full range of gear – except for medium and large winter jackets and shorts, which have all sold out. Please help Paul out by sending him a
private message via the forum indicating what you would like to purchase. His username is jackthekat. And remember: it’s cash or cheque only, Dynamates!

NOT ALL WHITE
+++ Craig’s nasty crash +++
On a final note, we’d like to wish CRAIG WHITE a speedy recovery following his crash at the Finsbury Park Road Race in Steeple, Essex, on Sunday. Craig was in the five-man break with SAM ‘SLAM DUNK’ HUMPHESON when he came off at 35mph, falling face-first into a trellis fence. He’s out of hospital, but MARTIN ‘COMEBACK’ GARRATT, who spoke to him on Tuesday, reports that he won’t be eating solid food for a while… http://tinyurl.com/2s9md7. Sam says: “I wish Craig all the best, and I feel for his poor mum. She was in Majorca to pick up the pieces when he broke his hip and was watching her first road race on Sunday.” Get well soon, pal…

WELD DONE
The aluminium tubing of this edition has been carefully welded together, which means its time to flip up our visor and thank everyone for sending stuff in. Always remember that the newsletter is an unadorned frame, and you are our wheels, components and finishing kit. So please keep Dyna-mailing your race reports, news and gossip to the address in the “from” field of this message – or simply hit your reply button. The deadline, as ever, is Wednesday afternoon for Friday’s edition. And now, as the lugs begin to cool, it only remains for us to remind you about…
