LES HEAR IT FOR PAUL
+++ Delahunty’s true power revealed +++
Forever lurking at the back, keenly waiting for the right moment to strike, the subtly-wielded power of PAUL ‘MONTY’ DELAHUNTY should never be underestimated – so it is fitting that the crafty Kiwi has managed to influence top-level discussions about improving the Parkride just days after his tactically perfect victory at the Les Ingham Memorial RR. As we type these words, the club’s committee is currently locked in the boardroom on the top floor of Dynamo Towers fiercely debating the merits of having an alternative 8am start for the Saturday ride, which is exactly what the no-nonsense New Zealander suggested under his “Kiwispin” forum alter-ego… http://tinyurl.com/5rs7xd. By his own admission, Paul is not a regular face at the roundabout by Ham Gate, preferring instead to punish himself at races such as Sunday’s abovementioned E/1/2/3 event in Surrey, where he bridged across on the first lap of the super-tough Bletchingley course to join IAN ‘KING OF’ PAINE, RICHARD ‘WIN ‘EM’ SIMMONDS and the rest of the leading group. With 20 miles of the 75-mile race to go, Chris McNamara, Chris Moores and another rider attacked the break – so the unfazed Fulham firecracker simply soloed his way to the trio who unwittingly surrendered 1st place by making him lead out the slightly uphill sprint. You beauty! Dehydrated Ian finished 9th, despite literally losing his bottle twice thanks to the slippery, newly-polished cages that held them, while Rich’s encounter with the puncture fairy failed to stop him getting back to the break and landing 17th place… http://tinyurl.com/67b6oq. Daredevil Delahunty followed up his win with 8th at rain-drenched Hillingdon on Tuesday… http://tinyurl.com/67b6oq …and another Dynamo threesome showed their mettle this week by taking on the might of a retail giant. So come with us now to Cheshire as we reveal how the blue, black and orange crew clashed with the orange and black army. It’s time to see hut they’re made of…

STORE BLIMEY!
+++ Halfords marks Dynamettes in stage race +++
Well-drilled teamsters SUSANNAH OSBORNE, CHARLIE ‘VICI’ BLACKMAN and REBECCA CURLEY were pleasantly surprised on Sunday to find a member of the Halfords-Bikehut pro squad on their wheel whenever any of them got near the front of the Cheshire Classic’s 50-mile road race stage – so it was only polite that the Dynamettes returned the compliment by chasing down the High Street girls’ first break before taking 9th, 13th and joint 13th respectively. Charlie, who had finished 7th in the two-mile Northwich time trial, kept that position on the final GC, while Susannah claimed 18th place overall and Rebecca took 24th. And just look at the quality of the field… http://tinyurl.com/5aah6w. Brilliant stuff, ladies!

SADDLE DO NICELY
+++ PB for JLJ, despite mechanical +++
The ladies’ Dynamette chum JENNY ‘J-LLOYD’ JONES recorded a personal best as the sun came out in Padworth, Berks, on Saturday, although the duathlon dazzler’s dream of finishing the Newbury RC ’25’ in less than 60 minutes was sadly thwarted. On-form JLJ, who clocked in at 1:00:48, reveals: “I had to stop at a roundabout and my saddle came loose, so a 49 second improvement should be possible!” In typical fashion, Jenny’s fella RICHARD ‘WIN ‘EM’ SIMMONDS expressed dissatisfaction with his time of 53:21, which only earned the self-critical cycling coach 3rd place… http://tinyurl.com/6ofjtj. You’re too hard on yourself, pal!

GOODACRE PROGRESS
+++ Patrick’s road to recovery +++
On a final note, we were pleased to hear that PATRICK GOODACRE has been in touch with PAUL ‘ALL-BLUE’ HARKNETT and RUSSELL ‘RUSTY’ SHORT to update them on his progress. The 23-year-old, who crashed on the Parkride more than 18 months ago, wrote: “I am currently in a rehab home for brain injuries in Thames Ditton. It’s all going well – at the moment I’m beginning to learn to walk again – and much better than being in a hospital. I just wanted to thank both of you for helping out where possible, and I am also in unbelievable debt to John Orwin and Christian Kinmont. Thank you. I will be back cycling as soon as possible.” Patrick also wants to get in contact with other members via the website, so you may see a post from him soon…

THAT’S YER BAL-LOT
Like a returning officer locking the door of the polling station, the time has come for us to thank everyone who sent stuff in for this issue before we pack up the booths and tot up the votes. Always remember that we hold the balance of power but we would be nothing without you, our much-valued constituents. So please keep Dyna-mailing your race reports, news and gossip to dynamite@londondynamo.co.uk, or simply hit your reply button. The deadline, as ever, is Wednesday afternoon for Friday’s edition. And now, as we sift through the soiled ballots, it only remains for us to remind you about…

CUT IT OUT
+++ Missing lap of Cutmill “winner” +++
This publication’s reputation as the hardest-working department in Dynamo Towers was almost ruined this week by the much-anticipated arrival of the sun, which mellowed out the editorial team to such an extent that the edition you are currently enjoying almost failed to be written in time. It didn’t help when the peerless Danny Baker encouraged the lackadaisical atmosphere by playing the calming sound of running water throughout his brilliant BBC London radio show… http://tinyurl.com/5kevcm …and perhaps the memory of the cheeky slacker who took a lap out at Cutmill on Sunday before crossing the line in 1st place had a malign, subconscious influence on our much-admired work ethic. Failing to live up to the stellar renown suggested by his club’s name, the disqualified VC Etoile rider appeared to puncture on the first lap just as JASON ‘WILLS’ GREEN, RICHARD ‘HAVE IT’ HOULT and ROB ‘THE SAINT’ JEFFROY began lifting the 3rd cat event to a ferocious pace that would ultimately jettison almost 20 competitors on the super-tough Surrey League course. Power-climber Richard claimed 4th, while cramp-hit Jason nabbed 13th as the race fragmented on the arduous uphill finish – and there was more Dynamo glory in the afternoon as RICHARD ‘PLACING’ MASON reaped victory in the 2/3 bunch sprint after Lewis Atkins shot off with Army CU’s Allan Ridler on the final lap to claim the top two places… http://tinyurl.com/5nlb3h. Third-placed Rich, who finished four places ahead of MATT ‘IRON’ BRIDGE, reveals: “The final lap had some antagonistic behaviour from a nameless rider who, when questioned about his shoddy turn-taking, indicated there was no way he was riding to get me anywhere near the finish just so I could win. Well, I think the best possible reply was to thrash them all anyway.” That showed him! Inspired by Mr Mason’s determination, it’s time for DYNAMITE! to shrug off its temperature-induced lethargy and reveal more Dyna-magnificent tales of derring-do, starting with a notable time trialist’s superb return to form far from his Kingston homestead. It’s time to head for the Midlands…

YOU GOTTA LOVATT
+++ Williamson beats big-hitter at stage race +++
Triathlete-turned-tester MARTIN ‘PIN-UP’ WILLIAMSON has experienced a dip in form of late – but he found his legs in resounding style on Friday when he beat Planet X point-gobbler Mark Lovatt into 5th at the prologue of the Nigel Measom Two Day RR. The chuffed hunk ventured all the way to Gilmorton in Leicestershire with brothers JOE and TOM ‘HUMBLE’ HEMMANT for the 1/2/3 event, which saw Tom’s elder sibling miss out on a top 10 place at the TT after getting stopped by a lorry. What a trucking liberty! The trio spent half of the first road stage attacking, only for Lovatt to quit cruising around at the back and put a move in which the three ‘Mos missed. Each of the threesome was off the front during various points in the longer final stage, and Tom came in between the bunch and the break to claim 15th place. His 7th place at the TT helped him secure the No.17 spot on the GC, while Martin finished a respectable 19th overall… http://tinyurl.com/5ccxwj. But despite all the fun of their jaunt to the North Midlands, it seems Martin still hates road racing. Tom reveals: “He thinks it’s too dangerous. He prefers riding up and down dual carriageways.” He’s gone to the dark side – there’s no saving him now!

SUZE CONTROL
+++ Osborne victorious at international event +++
The Dynamette wing of Britain’s best cycling club continued to prove itself as an emergent force with incredible results at the Bedford 2-Day International on Sunday and Monday. Sensational SUSANNAH OSBORNE beat off the pros to win the second stage, with REBECCA CURLEY taking 10th – and the final day saw wily CHARLIE ‘VICI’ BLACKMAN take five bonuses by going on a lone break for three laps of the hilly, twisty Millbrook circuit, which propelled her to 6th place on the final GC… http://tinyurl.com/6nwu76. The ladies’ achievements were marred by NAOMI ‘JUDGE’ ANDERSON’s trip to hospital after a nasty crash which resulted in her sunglasses smashing into her head – but the ladies put the incident behind them at Crystal Palace. Charlie won Tuesday’s women’s race, Susannah came 2nd, CLAIRE BEAUMONT was 5th while MELISSA WADAMS took 6th – and over in the fellas’ 3/4 race, Palace addict STUART ‘EASY’ SPIES came closer to racing with the big boys again by taking 2nd ahead of JASON ‘WILLS’ GREEN… http://tinyurl.com/5r6maa. Lovely stuff, all of you!

NO-BRAINER
+++ ‘Powdnall’ mindful of results error +++
With his custom-painted red Trek glinting in the sunshine as he cracks an off-colour joke, the presence of the man some call ‘The Engine’ was no doubt as conspicuous as ever at Crystal Palace, where the human tuning fork took 9th in Tuesday’s E/1/2 race – but it seems his fame has not yet spread to Cranfield, Beds, if the provisional results for the Andy Morrison Memorial RR were anything to go by. Firing off an e-mail to the organisers of the 40-mile 2/3 event, the miffed ‘Mo pointed out: “I came 6th on Saturday. You have my name down incorrectly as Brain Powdnall. It should be GUY POWDRILL. Please let BC know accordingly. Thanks.” Much to his relief, the error has been corrected… http://tinyurl.com/56b2ox …so hopefully no-one should labour under the misapprehension that Guy has a Brain to his name. Perish the thought!

RAYS AND FALL
Despite being beyond the reach of the sun’s rays, our famous soundproof bunker has been cooked up a treat by the glorious weather – which means there’s just enough time to thank everyone who sent in stuff for this issue before we get up from our Vic-20, walk over to the DYNAMITE! sofa, and collapse in a sweaty heap. Always remember we are the thermometer of Dynamo, but we would be nothing without you, our rocketing mercury. So please keep Dyna-mailing your race reports, news and gossip to dynamite@londondynamo.co.uk. The deadline, as ever, is Wednesday afternoon for Friday’s edition. And now, as we reach the verge of fainting, it only remains for us to remind you about…

SIMPLY THE VEST
+++ Victorious Hemmant forgets kit +++
Unassuming and courteous off the bike, yet liable to attack aggressively in a competitive situation, the Jekyll and Hyde character of TOM ‘HUMBLE’ HEMMANT has been apparent to this publication for many years – so it is appropriate that Dynamo’s quiet man took a ride on the Wildside at the Bec CC after a rummage in his kit bag prior to the E/1/2/3 event confirmed a well-documented shortcoming in his packing skills. Referring to an infamous incident where LUCY ‘DANCING’ DOVE had to dash back home before a race to get his shorts, the St Margarets man pointed out to IAN ‘KING OF’ PAINE that his long-suffering partner had forced him to pack an extra pair for Sunday’s 78-mile contest on the Lingfield circuit in Surrey – but Tom’s pride at the foresighted action dissolved when it became apparent he had forgotten to bring a jersey this time. With Lucy not present to bail him out, it looked like the absent-minded ‘Mo would be racing in his string vest, until a kindly competitor from another team saved the day – and so it came to pass that one of Dynamo’s top riders crossed the line in 1st place with “Wildside RT” proudly emblazoned across his chest. Let’s hope club sponsors Cyclefit, who also provide Tom with his much-loved Serotta, don’t look too unfavourably at missing out on the exposure! Hemmant’s path to victory began as he attacked on the first lap to reach a two-man break. Ian reached the expanded group later on and took 3rd… http://tinyurl.com/4o6jg3 …after Tom stayed with Andy Lyons’ attack on the short, steep Holtye climb. The impressive victory was one of an incredible six Dynamo wins in as many days – a club record that coincided with the DYNAMITE! Dyna-mail system going into total meltdown. So come with us now as we sift through a backlog of jubilant messages to re-live the heady excitement of the past week. Prepare for won hell of a ride…

THE JOY OF SIX
+++ Half-a-dozen heroes thrash rivals +++
Dynamo’s vanload of victories began last week with back-on-form MARTIN ‘PIN-UP’ WILLIAMSON taking 1st place at the Hounslow Wheelers’ Thursday night time trial, where he completed the lumpy 10-mile Chertsey course in 22:29… http://tinyurl.com/6r8gd2 …and earned appreciative nods from the red-and-white club’s old dudes in the process. Respect! Two days later, PAUL ‘MONTY’ DELAHUNTY rocketed out of the final corner at the Chertsey MoD circuit and into the top spot of the E/1/2 race as he valiantly held off the pack on the long finishing straight. Winning by an even more impressive margin, MARK ‘NUTTY BOY’ DRAYTON soloed away on lap five of the Hillingdon 4th cat event on Tuesday, much to the astonishment of 6th-placed ROB ‘HAPPY, HAPPY’ HARROLD… http://tinyurl.com/4lnhcr …who heard that his pal had eaten a cake containing nuts before the race despite being allergic to them. Perhaps he was just whizzing around the West London circuit in the hope he could locate a doctor! Meanwhile, over at Crystal Palace, winner RICHARD ‘HAVE IT’ HOULT led the Dynamo domination of the 3/4 race which saw STUART ‘EASY’ SPIES nab 2nd, TONY ‘PETER’ SMEDLEY take 4th, ROB ‘THE SAINT’ JEFFROY in 6th place and JASON ‘WILLS’ GREEN 7th. Crit queen CHARLIE ‘VICI’ BLACKMAN continued her unbeaten run in the women’s race after taking 9th in Olveston, Glos, on Sunday… http://tinyurl.com/6ycalm …but spare a thought for Palace E/1/2 regular IAN ‘KING OF’ PAINE, beaten into 2nd place by his nemesis, “Corridori Kid” Eric Rowsell. Taking issue with the official results, unlisted TOM ‘HUMBLE’ HEMMANT points out that he finished one place behind 5th-placed GUY ‘THE ENGINE’ POWDRILL, although RICHARD ‘PLACING’ MASON’s No10 spot doesn’t seem to be in doubt… http://tinyurl.com/3erphz. What a relief!

GIN AND BEAR IT
+++ Hayter’s tip for ailment +++
Ingenious imbiber WILL ‘SEE YA’ HAYTER claims to have discovered the perfect antidote to cramp in the form of a gin and tonic combined with salt and vinegar crisps – although he points out that they must both be taken the night before the race, not during it, as DAVID ‘PINKY’ GARDNER might be tempted to do. Will shall no doubt be glugging back his cure when he once again hosts the Dyna-monthly drinks evening, which has been steadily growing in popularity since its inception back in February. Those ‘Mos who head to the Freemason’s Arms in Wandsworth… http://tinyurl.com/398sbx …on Thursday 29th May might also get to hear details about Will’s adventure at the Tour of the Milburys in Meonstoke, Hants, on Saturday with JOE ‘BLOW’ HEMMANT and RICHARD ‘PLACING’ MASON. The lanky lad says of the two-stage, 2/3/4 event: “Joe came 4th in the four-mile time trial, and Rich would have come 5th, but he missed his start by 20 seconds and dropped to 9th. We then had a good road race, with Rich in an early break which ended up coming back, and Joe doing some excellent work to close down a late breakaway. A cheeky junior from GWR sneaked away at the death for the win, benefiting from the time bonuses to win on GC as well. Ben Wilson also sneaked a few bonus seconds along the way to jump into 3rd. So the end result was 4th on GC for me, 5th for Joe and 8th for Rich.” That, fellas… http://tinyurl.com/3mhjml ….is an excellent result all round! Venturing to Bellsyew in Kent the very next day, exhausted Will battled to hang on at SERRL’s 2/3/4 event on the Lamberhurst/Frant circuit, yet still managed to sneak into the top 10 on the final climb by nabbing 9th place… http://tinyurl.com/4k3h8k. Get that man a well-deserved G and T, Dynamates!

…AND A FEW ‘MO THINGS…
+++ Fully-recovered club boss TONY ‘PETER’ SMEDLEY 2nd at MoD 3rd cat race on Saturday, with STUART ‘EASY’ SPIES 4th and CHRISTIAN ‘HARDCASTLE’ CORMACK 10th… http://tinyurl.com/3m2m3k +++ Another personal best for JENNY ‘J-LLOYD’ JONES – 2:05:17 at the Charlotteville CC ’50’, followed by 3rd in the 4th round of the National Rudy Project Time Trial series in Newmarket +++

STEPPING DOWN
The view from the top of the podium is always a pleasurable one, but as we pause to thank everyone who sent in stuff for this issue, Dynamo must now relinquish its unofficial title as Britain’s Most Winningest Club (8th to 13th May 2008 only) and take its place once more among ordinary cycling mortals. Always remember we are a fulsome bouquet, but we would be quite pointless without you, our wonderful winners. So please keep Dyna-mailing your race reports, news and gossip to dynamite@londondynamo.co.uk. The deadline, as ever, is Wednesday afternoon for Friday’s edition. MARK HIM OUT
+++ Wood’s mystery pal +++
Over the years, this publication has become a large, all-encompassing pair of arms, bringing Dynamates together in a huge weekly group hug – so the editorial team was naturally delighted to hear that lonely ‘Mo STEVE ‘LONESOME PINE’ WOOD managed to make a new pal at the Dartmoor Classic Cyclosportive after failing to see any other Dynamos at the Tour of Flanders amateur event last month. Steve, who completed the hilly 100-mile route in blistering heat the Sunday before last to earn a bronze-standard medal, reveals that he spotted a couple of blue, black and orange-clad riders at the finish in Kingsteignton, Devon, and also met someone called Mark during the ride – which is a bit like saying you went to Richmond Park and saw a tree. There’s about 10 Dyna-Marks, pal! That same weekend, Dynamatic chums ALEX ARAUJO, JAMIE ‘TUCKER’ JENKINS and ELLIOT KATZ tackled all 502 miles of the four-day Kelloggs Tour of Ireland Cycle Challenge, which saw the trio launch a brief escape within a few miles of stage one’s finish in Cavan and feature prominently at the front of the epic final stage’s adventure through the Wicklow mountains… http://tinyurl.com/5fvmrk. Alex took 9th overall, Elliot 26th, and Jamie, who was knocked off on stage two, finished 30th… http://tinyurl.com/6nh7v4. Great stuff, lads! Not to be outdone by the three musketeers, Dynamo double act PAUL ‘MONTY’ DELAHUNTY and TOM ‘HUMBLE’ HEMMANT put on a sterling display of teamwork at the Hillingdon Grand Prix on Saturday, with super-strong Tom giving his kiwi chum a massive lead out for the finale of the E/1/2 national series event. Paul nabbed 6th and Tom was 7th – but sadly, another Dynamo friendship hasn’t been quite so harmonious of late, so come with us now to a Sussex time trial course as we reveal how a gamble has left a certain lanky lad out of pocket. It’s time to book a table for a slice of humble pie…

DINNER TAKES ALL
+++ Powdrill loses bet again +++
Famished Dynamates looking for a free lunch might well be tempted to challenge GUY ‘THE ENGINE’ POWDRILL, who conclusively lost his double-or-quits time trialing bet with PAUL ‘CANNONBALL’ CALLINAN prior to taking 6th at the E/1/2 race at Crystal Palace this week. Readers may remember that diner-mo Paul beat his foppish chum by just one second at the Farnborough and Camberley CC 25-miler, thereby earning a dinner for himself and his wife Clare – and now the sensitive Goldman Sachs machine will be stumping up for another slap-up feed after going 42 seconds slower than the Kingston killer at the Addiscombe CC ’25’ in Broadbridge Heath, West Sussex, last month, which also saw RICHARD ‘DOCTOR’ LEGGE take 3rd with 54:10… http://tinyurl.com/6dbz44. Having suffered two blows to his wallet, wounded Guy used RICHARD ‘WIN ‘EM’ SIMMONDS’ know-how to revamp his riding position before returning to the same course on Sunday for the Worthing Excelsior event, where he earned 1st place by knocking an incredible 2mins 11secs off his original time of 56:46… http://tinyurl.com/5a7zwg. To paraphrase 10th-placed MARTIN ‘PIN-UP’ WILLIAMSON, the man’s a monster! Guy’s TT rival Paul missed out on going head-to-head with Richard after the cycling coach’s car broke down en route to the Didcot Phoenix ’25’ in Cumnor, Berks, the Sunday before last, although Dynamo’s honorary president consoled himself by clocking 54:59 for 3rd place… http://tinyurl.com/6hm86t …and the following Tuesday saw the pair team up to take 3rd at the Bicester Millennium 2-up ’10’ at the RAF base in Weston-On-The-Green, Oxfordshire… http://tinyurl.com/6ofzbe. Paul, who did 21:31 with his partner, admits: “In reality, it was five miles following Richard’s backside and hanging on. He’s on fire, man!” And the evangelical duo will no doubt be pleased to hear that GORDON ‘KEN-A-LIKE’ KENNEWAY is becoming a convert to the dark arts of the tri-spoke and the stopwatch after clocking 21:33 to take 7th at the Farnham CC open ’10’ in Bentley, Hants, on Saturday. At this rate, we’ll all be testers soon, Dynamates!

A WALES OF A TIME
+++ Parkride beast let loose in valleys +++
He’s done it! Following a training race at the Chertsey MoD circuit a couple of weeks ago, the Parkride’s infamous diesel-mo DAVID ‘GOLIATH’ ANDREWS simultaneously launched and concluded his Armstrong-like season at the L’etape De La Defonce in Cowbridge, Glamorgan at the weekend, achieving 12th on the GC of the legendary 3/4 event after taking 5th on the first stage and 3rd on the hilly last day without even getting out of the saddle. Nice one, fella! The fiery fortysomething’s younger team-mates CHRIS ‘VAN CHADDERS’ CHAPMAN, STUART ‘EASY’ SPIES and TOBY ‘IS IT COS I IS’ BLACKMAN wore down the opposition with continual attacks on both road stages – and the awesome foursome took 8th on the team time trial, which saw plucky Chris haul himself back on the blue train after getting uncoupled. Stu, who was 8th on the last stage, finished 13th on the GC, with Chris taking 14th and Toby 59th… http://tinyurl.com/5dul9a. Meanwhile, over on the flat-ish Ellen’s Green circuit in Surrey, SUSANNAH OSBOURNE and CHARLIE ‘VICI’ BLACKMAN were forcing the pace at the South East Women’s RR Championship, shelling out a rider from the eight-strong leading group before taking 2nd and 3rd respectively… http://tinyurl.com/6lmh4z. Never a stranger to road rash, blameless Charlie got another dose when an Addiscombe rider lost control after crossing the line – and over in Woodchurch, Kent, poor TONY ‘PETER’ SMEDLEY seemed to be suffering from a dose of something else entirely as he paid three visits to the little boys’ room prior to the start of the 50-mile 3/4 Kennardington race. The doughty club captain got in a break with JASON ‘WILLS’ GREEN and a pair of riders who ended up powering away from them to secure the top two places on the podium – but Tony later managed to control his dodgy guts by winning the bunch sprint to take 3rd, while Jason nabbed 5th… http://tinyurl.com/5e75be. Royal lookalike Jase was riding with a buckled Ksyrium following a bash on the bottom corner at Crystal Palace, where he returned on Tuesday to take 5th in the 3/4 event… http://tinyurl.com/4kalje There’s no stopping that lad!

TORKEL PICTURES
+++ Dohmers’ movie of sprint +++
Any readers who want to spend even more time avoiding work might want to check out SAM ‘EPIC’ WOODHOUSE’s photos of last year’s club champs, which finally arrived at our famous soundproof bunker this week. There’s a special prize to the first person who identifies the mystery ‘Mo standing next to PAUL ‘ALL BLUE’ HARKNETT in the first pic… http://tinyurl.com/5jwqlh. And if you’re still at a loose end, have a gander at the madness of the sprint at the Hillingdon GP, filmed by TORKEL ‘REDTOP’ DOHMERS… http://tinyurl.com/633cgg …although his futuristic pod car, which can travel up buildings, looks far more interesting. Just click on the third picture along the top row… http://www.redtop.se. If only he could invent a bike that makes sub-standard 4th cats corner properly at Palace!

GUY AND MIGHTY
+++ Andrews on ‘Team Charlie’ for TT champs +++
As the chronicler of Dynamo’s rich history, it pleases this publication no end to announce that the tradition of getting a rollicking from Guy Andrews was revived on Sunday as CHARLIE ‘VICI’ BLACKMAN powered her way to an incredible 21:50 at the national 10-mile time trial championships in Petersfield, Hants. The veteran tester popped up by the side of the A3 to volubly encourage his protégé to dig in for the final three miles – but despite dishing out a trademark verbal, it appears that the club’s founding father has been mellowed by the working environment of the Rapha head office, if his courteous and thoughtful pre-race behaviour is anything to go by. Impressed Charlie reveals: “Guy had every last second of my warm-up planned, from the time I spent on the turbo to the 40-minute road ride where he accompanied me on his bike, then the timing of my loo stops and even checking what music I had on my iPod to see if it was suitably aggressive. He told me what to eat and when and kept me well away from the other riders so that I didn’t panic.” What a gent! Using GORDON ‘KEN-A-LIKE’ KENNEWAY’s disk wheel and RICHARD ‘PLACING’ MASON’s Bora, the sensational schoolteacher passed five other riders and hit the five-mile mark in 10:35, which stood as the fastest time for more than an hour. Guy was jubilant when Charlie placed 13th among the 66-strong high-quality field, just 1:18 behind winner Julia Shaw – and 21st-placed JENNY ‘J-LLOYD’ JONES proved she is on course to hitting her target time of 22:30 by the end of the year… http://tinyurl.com/65a2q7 …although her high-achieving fella RICHARD ‘WIN ‘EM’ SIMMONDS confesses to being a “miserable git” after finishing 44th in the men’s race with 20:25… http://tinyurl.com/6k3rxw. He’ll be back with a vengeance soon, Dynamates! The championships were held in overcast conditions following a blustery and wet night which led the organisers to consider using one of two other alternative courses – but it was a different story on the south coast, where another Dynamo literally and metaphorically had his day in the sun. So come with us now to a course described as “Cutmill on acid” for a sizzling day out. Here comes the sunburn…

MOSQUITO BITES
+++ Pack stung by early attack +++
When riders get dropped on a two-mile neutralised climb to the start, it’s fair to say that the race itself isn’t going to be pretty – and that proved to be the case at the In-Gear Junior Tour Of Sussex 3/4 support event in East Dean on Sunday where Mosquito Bikes’ John Heaton-Armstrong attacked from the gun to ensure victory on the challenging 54-mile South Downs course. Wily JASON ‘WILLS’ GREEN noticed the pack was suffering in the heat at the end of the first lap, so he attacked to take the King of the Mountains prime and powered on for 10 incredible miles to catch the Mossie rider. The duo worked together to start the final lap with 2mins 15secs on the bunch, which had been reduced to about 15 riders, and Jason ended up taking 2nd after a bout of cramp. The oar-some ex-rower was then able to watch TORKEL ‘REDTOP’ DOHMERS sprint across the line in fine form to take 11th… http://tinyurl.com/5oewa3. Fantastic stuff, fellas! Meanwhile, over in Sholden, Kent, fired-up vet ROBIN ‘OSSIE’ OSBORNE took 6th in the National 50+ Masters… http://tinyurl.com/4gcu9h …and followed that up with 19th in the Hillingdon E/1/2 race on Tuesday night, where he was the second Dynamo home after 7th-placed GAVIN ‘NO LYIN’ RYAN… http://tinyurl.com/6557xd. Robin says: “It’s not quite the same as the Dynamettes’ and Jason’s heroic efforts, but I’m really pleased with the start to my second-ever race season.” And so you should, pal!

IN A HARRY
+++ Sprinall and Reid joint 1st in Flyer +++
Chuffed sportivist NICK ‘CRIKEY’ DOVE dropped DYNAMITE! a line to thank us for last week’s coverage of the Dartmoor Classic and the Tour of Ireland Challenge before revealing that two ‘Mos romped home with the fastest time in the SWRC May Flyer a couple of weeks ago. So step forward ROB REID and HARRY SPRINGALL, who completed the 87 mile long route to Downside, Surrey, in 4hrs 26mins… http://tinyurl.com/6zqmd3. You kept that one quiet, fellas!

JUST IN TIME
+++ Two TT victories +++
Finally, in a dramatic “stop press” moment, the editorial team has just received news of two victories from Dynamo’s pointy-hat brigade. On-form MARTIN ‘PIN-UP’ WILLIAMSON pulled 22:28 to win the Kingston Wheelers/Kingston Phoenix ’10’ in Holmwood, Surrey, on Wednesday night, while the individual times of RICHARD ‘DOCTOR’ LEGGE, GUY ‘THE ENGINE’ POWDRILL and GORDON ‘KEN-A-LIKE’ KENNEWAY were fast enough to win the team competition at the Charlotteville CC ’25’ in Bentley, Hants, on Saturday… http://tinyurl.com/5aou8n. Great stuff, all of you!

GET SHOUT OF HERE

The deadline, as ever, is Wednesday afternoon for Friday’s edition. And now, as our voice begins to fade, it only remains for us to remind you about…

FLUSHED WITH SUCCESS
+++ Delahunty on div champs’ podium after toilet trouble +++
Known for weaving through the peloton at devilish speeds with his eye fixed firmly on the chequered flag, McEwenesque marvel PAUL ‘MONTY’ DELAHUNTY has earned a reputation over the years for his tremendous guts – and it was precisely that part of the compact sprinter’s anatomy that got him into a messy situation after doing hill reps in Richmond Park with tag team partner TOM ‘HUMBLE’ HEMMANT on Wednesday night. The nibbling New Zealander had consumed an entire tub of Marks and Spencer mini-bite flapjacks during the course of his working day, leaving his digestive system in such a severe state that he was forced to track down a Royal Parks official to unlock one of the men’s toilet facilities. Hunched double and running in cleats, pain-struck Paul managed to enter a cubicle and extricate himself from his bib shorts just in time – but readers of a sensitive disposition may want to turn away now, as apparently he wasn’t quite “on target”. Let’s just say he performed a clean-up operation before heading home and we’ll leave it at that. This publication Dyna-mailed Paul for his side of the story and received a blank e-mail by way of reply, which probably translates as “no comment”. In any case, the Kiwi crackerjack put the incident behind him on Sunday by taking a hugely impressive 3rd place at the Central Region Road Championship in Wing, Beds, where he found himself in the chasing group with DAVID ‘DORIAN’ STREULE before Tony Gibb blasted away and the bunch caught the rest of them. Later, Paul’s pal Tom jumped, taking Simon Gaywood to his PCA pal Gibb, who powered away less than a mile from the finish to win the 88-mile E/1/2/3 event. Hemmant, who was swamped on the line, says of his pal’s bunch sprint result: “Paul is very casual about getting 3rd but it is brilliant considering the competition and the fact that the finishing hill was a bit long and steep for his lardy backside.” Cheeky! Earlier on that same hill, JASON ‘WILLS’ GREEN took 5th in the 46-mile 3/4 race, which earned him the six points required to reach 2nd cat… http://tinyurl.com/6g6x44 …and speaking of newly-upgraded ‘Mos, RICHARD ‘AV IT’ HOULT bagged a massive result by taking 3rd at the South East champs… http://tinyurl.com/5u2yeg. Keen as ever to shine the light on others’ achievements, Tom comments: “This is an awesome ride by anyone’s standards and even more so for a new second cat. He seems to be a decent guy as well and isn’t big-headed about it.” But two Dynamates have been keeping even quieter about their podium finishes – so come with us now to a glitzy awards ceremony across the Channel as the duo are handed bouquets of flowers. Here comes the sweet smell of success…

A CHEER IN PROVENCE
+++ Mason and Kenneway shine at L’Epervier +++
One of the most memorable Dyna-misadventures chronicled in DYNAMITE! was GORDON ‘KEN-A-LIKE’ KENNEWAY’s interruption of a wedding reception two years ago in Provence, where he begged for a can of Coke by announcing to the father of the bride in questionable French: “I am searching for sugar.” The carb-depleted ‘Mo was forced to make the request after missing the feeding stations at Le Trophée de L’Epervier – but he was rather more fortunate in this year’s edition of the ultra-competitive sportive, which saw him take 6th overall and 3rd in the 30-39 age group. The Fulham firecracker’s chum RICHARD ‘PLACING’ MASON outdid him by achieving 2nd overall and winning the same age category as Gordon, thus providing the Dyna-marvellous sight of Britain’s best cycling club dominating a continental podium… http://tinyurl.com/5g59yw. Nice one, fellas! Delighted Rich, who completed the 82-mile course in 04:00:13, reveals: “The pace was high from the off. Early on, another London-based rider said to us, ‘Bloody hell – it’s just like being at Hillingdon on a Tuesday night!’ The only quip I could come up with at short notice was: ‘Don’t worry, mate – there are only 400 of us in this event!'” Weeks of Mallorcan climbing paid off for the ginger Kiwi during the 43 miles of hills, including the seven-mile ascent of Col des Notre Dame des Agnes – but Rich adds: “The final three miles were incredibly tough and I got tailed off from the lead of the race. We formed a small chase group when over the top and got to the peak of the final climb together. Most of them were in a different race, so I rode the nine miles downhill at full speed and finished alone for 2nd place. The winner, who was in the group up the road, also soloed home.” Unlucky JAMES KINMONT nursed a badly damaged wheel to the finish in Cogolin after breaking a spoke, while CHARLIE ‘HARDY’ PEARCH was seething after being directed off-course – but spare a thought for CHRISTIAN KINMONT, whose call of nature was interrupted by a pack of dogs chasing him down the street, one of whom chomped into his ankle and briefly remained attached as he turned the pedals. Ouch!

RICHARD THE FIRST
+++ Simmonds ends his strop +++
He had been sulking since his under-par performance at the national ’10’ champs – but RICHARD ‘WIN ‘EM’ SIMMONDS finally put a smile back on his chops by taking 1st place at the Westerly CC 25-mile time trial in Bentley, Hants, on Sunday. The cycling coach clocked 51:16, knocking almost two minutes off his personal best, and he was impressed by PAUL ‘CANNONBALL’ CALLINAN pulling 55 minutes flat after two weeks off the bike. Rich’s missus JENNY ‘J-LLOYD’ JONES went one minute over the hour mark… http://tinyurl.com/5fqxg6 …due to a mechanical fault forcing her to stick to a 53×16 maximum – but she’ll be back in action with her high-achieving fella at the nationals on Sunday. Good luck to you both!

RIDE ON TIME
+++ Get to Richmond Park for 8.30am tomorrow +++
They say bad luck comes in threes – so after Crystal Palace getting rained off on Tuesday, the Dynamo website briefly going down and the Central Champs support race getting an eight-mile tour of Bedfordshire’s finest roundabouts as the lead car searched for the start of the circuit, it would appear that the shift of the Parkride’s start time is destined to go to plan. But just to make sure, DYNAMITE! is going to remind you anyway. From tomorrow until the end of the summer, the Parkride will begin at 8.30am, NOT 9am. Set your alarm clocks, Dynamates!

…AND A FEW ‘MO THINGS…
+++ PAUL ‘MONTY’ DELAHUNTY 2nd at Hillingdon E/1/2/3 race on Tuesday, with lead-out man TOM ‘HUMBLE’ HEMMANT taking 8th and GAVIN ‘NO LYIN’ RYAN leading the bunch home by taking 9th +++ ROB ‘HAPPY, HAPPY’ HARROLD moves up to 3rd cat after getting into a seven-man break at the Hillingdon fours race and finishing 6th +++ Newcomer ADAM FREEMAN thanks the ‘Mos on the 8am Sunday ride for their patience with him on the climbs, adding: “I was obviously in the wrong group!” +++

RICH PICKINGS
+++ TT triumphs for Simmonds and namesake +++
Following the laws of science and logic, and governed by the unbending tyranny of the clock, your average time trialist laughs in the face of those simple-minded triskaidekaphobes who are currently clutching a rabbit’s foot or avoiding walking under ladders on what is believed to be unluckiest day of the year – but as club captain TONY ‘PEETEER’ SMEDLEY wisely pointed out on the forum this week, it would appear that Lady Chance’s mysterious hand has already played a part in the testers’ world, in the sense that being blessed with the name Richard predisposes you to gravitate towards the clandestine realm of the tri-spoke. No fewer than five Richards made the top 20 of the 25-mile National Championships in Alconbury, Cambs, including our very own RICHARD ‘WIN ‘EM’ SIMMONDS, who put in a stunning time of 00:54:13 on Sunday to claim 9th place and beat his big-hitting namesake Richard Prebble… http://tinyurl.com/6mm4zc. Great stuff, fella! The previous day saw former triathlete RICHARD ‘DOCTOR’ LEGGE help Dynamo retain the title of Surrey League team time trial champs as the Dyna-mighty ‘A’ squad powered along the 35-mile Alfold-Kirdford circuit to record a time of 01:18:32, beating 2nd-placed Wildside RT by 33 seconds. Legge’s 4-up team-mate TOM ‘HUMBLE’ HEMMANT ruthlessly decided to drop his own brother when the elder sibling began struggling to take his turns on the front, leading GUY ‘THE ENGINE’ POWDRILL to ponder if Joe should have swapped places with the more auspiciously-named tester RICHARD ‘PLACING’ MASON, who took 4th place alongside GORDON ‘KEN-A-LIKE’ KENNEWAY, STUART ‘EASY’ SPIES and DAVID ‘DORIAN’ STREULE… http://tinyurl.com/6locxl. But incredibly, unstoppable Guy and Joe were racing again just a few hours later in the shadow of a famous meat market in central London – so come with us now as we watch the duo carve up those corners. It’s time for some prime cuts…

NOC-OUT PERFORMANCE
+++ Dynamos clinch places in Smithfield top 15 +++
Their enthusiasm unaffected by the light rain, the DYNAMITE! cheerleading team was volubly offering encouragement to MARTIN ‘COMEBACK’ GARATT and PAUL ‘MONTY’ DELAHUNTY on Saturday night after the pace of the Smithfield Nocturne’s headlining E/1/2 event got the better of the duo – but it was during the 2/3/4 support race in the afternoon that the crowds of spectators witnessed the capital’s finest cycling club make a Dyna-massive impact, despite some of them being disguised by the monochrome livery of Cyclefit due to the sheer number of ‘Mos taking part. The hour-and-five-laps contest saw WILL ‘SEE YA’ HAYTER, JOE ‘BLOW’ HEMMANT, GUY ‘THE ENGINE’ POWDRILL, GAVIN ‘NO LYIN’ RYAN and HUW ‘AITCH’ WATKINS form part of the 20-strong lead group which emerged 10 minutes into the race. Team Tor’s Douglas Dewey and Ben Wilson of Cycling Weekly soon broke away to build up an unassailable lead, giving them 1st and 2nd place respectively. Half a minute later, Gavin, Huw, Guy, Will and Joe stormed across the line to take 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 13th respectively… http://tinyurl.com/554p85. Great stuff, chaps! And busier-than-ever Guy was back for more crit action on Tuesday night, taking 3rd at the Crystal Palace E/1/2 race after forming a break early on with Matt Seaton and later being joined by eventual winner Erick Rowsell – otherwise known as the infamous Corridori Kid. Damn, that youngster can sprint! Tester JENNY ‘J-LLOYD’ JONES followed up her impressive 14th place at the women’s 25-mile champs… http://tinyurl.com/6lmaaf …by debuting at the south London circuit, where she made the beginner’s error of getting permanently detached from the leaders on the first lap. She nevertheless avoided being lapped and took 4th place in the women’s race, but adds: “Next time I’ll know to sprint for the first corner!”

TWO-BY BLACKMAN
+++ Licence upgrade prompts second race of the weekend +++
Barnes badass TOBY ‘IS IT COS I IS’ BLACKMAN got his ticket to 3rd catsville on Saturday by taking the No.4 spot in the 4th cat race at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth… http://tinyurl.com/5cglff …and he eagerly followed up his flat-track triumph by tackling the daunting gradients of Barcombe in East Sussex the next day, where he bowed out of the 3rds race after an ambitious turn on the front. Unlucky PAUL ‘QUACKERS’ DRAKE punctured, and CHRIS ‘CALAMITY’ CAMPBELL bade farewell soon after his chain flipped off, which meant CHRISTIAN ‘HARDCASTLE’ CORMACK was the last ‘Mo left in the race when he tried to jump on the penultimate lap, cooking himself in the process but nevertheless managing to finish a creditable 15th… http://tinyurl.com/5zu4l6. Good work, sir!

WOOD YOU BELIEVE IT
+++ Steve makes new pals +++
It appears that STEVE ‘LONESOME PINE’ WOOD’s ongoing quest to make friends with fellow Dynamos reaped another pal on Sunday in the form of KIMBERLY ‘CANUCK’ KABATOFF. The Cyclefitter was one of four ‘Mos Steve encountered on what he describes as “the best day’s riding I’ve ever done” – the 161-mile Paris-Roubaix sportive, which was blessed with sun to dry out the muddy pave. The previous day saw ALEX ARAUJO, LIZ MALLOY and JOHN WITTS tackle the daunting, foggy, 105-mile Ventoux sportive, finishing 33rd, 5th and 40th in their respective categories. Alex reveals: “The peak of the Ventoux was shrouded in fog, with a temperature of 3C. The valleys were baking in heat, and throughout the ride there was a mysterious circulating wind that only ever seemed to hit you square in the chest. The descent from the summit was cold and dangerous, as the fog covered much of the back of the mountain. I wondered what the white residue on the front of my forks was until I realised it was ice crystals.” Crikey!

TOTAL MAYHEM
+++ Last-minute hunt for MTB riders +++
Finally, RUSSELL ‘RUSTY’ SHORT is looking for ‘Mos to replace those who have dropped out of next weekend’s Giant Mountain Mayhem 24-hour mountain bike race in Ledbury, Hereforshire… http://tinyurl.com/5wcqqf. Dyna-mail him at russell.short@uk.agimedia.com if you’re interested. You’ll really be helping the little fella!

BRIGHTON WRONG
+++ Blue train’s trip is no act of charity +++
Like those other boys in blue, the Dyna-morals of Britain’s most upstanding cycle club are always been beyond question – except for one day in the cycling calendar when a band of naughty ‘Mos pretend to be doing a charity ride when they are actually on a fast-paced training run to the coast. For the second year running, PAUL ‘ALL BLUE’ HARKNETT instigated Dynamo’s cheeky infiltration of the British Heart Foundation’s London to Brighton event, arriving at Nightingale Lane at 5:45am on Sunday with his neighbour and one-time tandem partner JASON ‘WILLS’ GREEN with the intention of finding out where to join the undisclosed route – and by the time their 16 co-conspirators arrived, the riders from the official mass start at nearby Clapham Common began rolling fortuitously in their direction. Paul reveals: “We had no chance to talk tactics, so some of us gunned it and others were left standing. After about five miles it was clear we were about five short, so DAVID ‘GOLIATH’ ANDREWS kindly volunteered to scout back down the field while we eased off. He returned with two ‘Mos, the other three having decided to hang back with their friends, so off we went!” Passing dozens of cyclists while attracting occasional guests, the speedy blue train caught out a few marshals who only just managed to stop cars at junctions in time – and after regrouping at the top of Ditchling, the manic ‘Mos began attracting “slow down” signals from event officials as they became the first group to arrive in Brighton before 8.30am. Avoiding the finish line, the famished 15 feasted on a well-earned full English at a beachside café… http://tinyurl.com/5ob62s …before heading back, using the old training routes of former local man DAVID ‘PINKY’ GARDNER to help them complete the 125-mile round trip. Excellent work, fellas! There was also another successful Dynamo presence in Sussex going on at the same time as Paul’s trip – so come with us now as we relate how a certain New Zealander powered his black-and-white Cervelo to victory yet again. It’s time to rock those bars to the finish line…

ACTION REE-PLAY
+++ Delahunty takes second victory in less than a week +++
He proudly showed off his brand new BMC at the pointy end of Sunday’s Giles Ree Memorial – and two days after the 1/2/3 event in Warninglid, West Sussex, stunned GUY ‘THE ENGINE’ POWDRILL was still shaking his head in disbelief as he tried to work out how an 81-mile race lasting three-and-a-quarter hours could end with such a ferociously fast bunch sprint. Official results had not been released when DYNAMITE! chatted to the leisurely south Londoner, so we were surprised to discover a notable omission from his account – namely that Kiwi crackerjack PAUL ‘MONTY’ DELAHUNTY actually won the flipping thing… http://tinyurl.com/53gcrd. If Guysie isn’t in the top 10, he’s not interested! Devilish Delahunty’s impressive victory came after his unsuccessful 22-mile break with six other riders, including RICHARD ‘AV IT’ HOULT and IAN ‘KING OF’ PAINE, the latter having previously managed to stay away for more than 35 miles with one other like-minded sadist before being caught by the bunch. Paul’s tag team partner TOM ‘HUMBLE’ HEMMANT attacked and was joined by Norwood Paragon’s Chris Moores before their brief effort was thwarted, leaving the man from St Margarets to keep the pace high for his team-mate – and despite being boxed in with 200 metres to go, daredevil Paul somehow managed to take off 20m behind the front of the race and claim victory. More amazingly, the compact sprinter had won the Surrey League E/1/2/3/4 handicap just three days previously at the Chersey MoD circuit, where WILL ‘SEE YA’ HAYTER nabbed 7th place as well… http://tinyurl.com/6rhuo4 …before gearing up for this weekend’s Mountain Mayhem 24-hour MTB race. It’s going to be a muddy one, pal!

THAT’S HOUR JENNY
+++ Sub-60 minute for TT Dynamette +++
She went one minute over the hour due to a mechanical fault at the beginning of the month – so JENNY ‘J-LLOYD’ JONES was over the moon to clock 59:08 on Saturday at the Farnham RC 25-mile time trial, which also saw her high-achieving fella RICHARD ‘WIN ‘EM’ SIMMONDS pull 52:04 to take 2nd. Having been under the weather since beating Richard Prebble at the National ’25’ Champs last week, the cycling coach was not too bothered about going 20 seconds slower than the big-hitter this time around – and he was pleased to note that DAVID ‘DORIAN’ STREULE showed his baby-face at the TT in Bentley, Hants, clocking 57:49 for joint 22nd place… http://tinyurl.com/6zk5k7. The DYNAMITE! editorial team would like to wish Rich the best of luck for the National ’50’, which takes place tomorrow – but as he notched up a personal best of 1:48:27 at the Reading CC event in Aldermaston, Hants, on Sunday, he probably won’t need it!

DRAGON FIRED-UP
+++ Jeffroy back in Welsh sportive’s top ten +++
After skipping the 2007 the Dragon Ride, former runner-up ROB ‘THE SAINT’ JEFFROY was back with a vengeance at this year’s edition, completing the 110-mile route out of Bridgend, South Wales, in 05:26:33 to claim 7th place among Sunday’s 1,225 finishers – and newcomer ROB REID didn’t do too badly, taking 6th with 05:26:25. Great stuff, fellas!

CRYSTAL UNCLEAR
+++ Palace finish too quick for number taker +++
The ever-helpful RICHARD ‘PLACING’ MASON volunteered his services as line judge at Crystal Palace on Tuesday, although the chances of him being invited back by the notepad and Dictaphone crew is in doubt after he told one of them at the close of the E/1/2 race: “Sorry mate – I didn’t get any of that.” Doh! So for the benefit of the ginger IT man, DYNAMITE! would like to point out that RICHARD ‘AV IT’ HOULT was 6th, GUY ‘THE ENGINE’ POWDRILL came 8th and IAN ‘KING OF’ PAINE nabbed 9th. There was a Dynamo 1-2-3 in the women’s race courtesy of CHARLIE ‘VICI’ BLACKMAN, SUSANNAH ‘GUNDOLA’ OSBOURNE and REBECCA ‘WHIRLIGIG’ CURLEY, while the 3/4 event saw none other than club captain TONY ‘PEETEER’ SMEDLEY take 1st place… http://tinyurl.com/6qc94j …as he avoided the nasty stack that left RUNE ‘SIZZLER’ SANBECK with a broken collarbone. We hope you heal up soon, pal!

END OF THE PIER
We’ve come to the end of this seaside special, which means there’s just enough time to thank everyone who sent stuff in for this issue before we roll up the beach towel and head back to the big smoke. Always remember we are but a stick of rock, and we would be nothing without your names running right the way through it, so please keep Dyna-mailing your race reports, news and gossip to dynamite@londondynamo.co.uk. The deadline, as ever, is Wednesday afternoon for Friday’s edition. And now, as we toss the final pebble into the sea, it only remains for us to remind you about…

HIGH IN-TENTS-ITY
+++ Hayter’s team makes top 10 in MTB campathon +++
This publication’s editorial team likes to think of itself as a wake-up call to the hundreds of Dynamates who, like yourself, may be feeling run down by a hard week at work – so we were somewhat disappointed when a group of mountain-biking ‘Mos gave us a series of zombie-like stares on Sunday after we had delivered a buoyant, breezy, Debbie Reynolds-style “good mornin'”… http://tinyurl.com/648vcv …at a campsite in Ledbury, Herefordshire. Admittedly, the fellas had been up all night doing the Giant Mountain Mayhem 24-hour race, whereas we were off to do the pleasant 62-mile Mayhem Classic sportive through the Malverns, leaving our chums huddling over the ashen remains of a depleted barbecue in their wind-battered For Goodness Shakes gazebo – half of which had been dismantled just before DYNAMITE! witnessed three or four similar structures nearby attempting to take flight. The three Dynamo teams had also endured a steady supply of rain, culminating in a downpour around midnight which saw their lap times for the eight-mile circuit increase from 45 minutes to more than two hours as the mud-strewn off-camber sections became nearly impossible to walk across, let alone ride. And Dynamo’s dark night of the soul can best be summed up by DAVID ‘DORIAN’ STREULE’s comment to South African “ringer” Alistair Paterson who had brought his spouse and a camper van to the event: “Your warm bed and a warm wife are looking very tempting right now.” Thankfully, the baby-faced Blackpoolian managed to stay in his tent with younger brother Mike – and as the sun finally came out on Sunday afternoon for the close of the race, trip organiser WILL ‘SEE YA’ HAYTER witnessed his exhausted team-mate STUART ‘EASY’ SPIES arrive at the finishing pen just four minutes before the 2pm cut-off time, thereby enabling sleep-refreshed single-speeder MARTIN ‘PIN-UP’ WILLIAMSON to propel the Dynamo ‘A’ squad into 9th place among the 248-strong list of Sport teams as he completed their 25th lap. Great work, chaps! Their team-mate CHRIS ‘VAN CHADDERS’ CHAPMAN sustained a nasty-looking gash on his right leg when he hit a pair of back-markers early Saturday evening before smashing his helmet on a low-hanging branch the next day. But heading the injury list was STEVE ‘FINGERS’ FARDELL, who bowed out on lap six due to a hand injury, leaving MICHAEL ‘LUNGER’ SNEYD, Mike Streule and Alistair to soldier on to become the 115th-placed Sport team. The Dynamo ‘B’ squad – RUSSELL ‘RUSTY’ SHORT, MATT ‘IRON’ BRIDGE, Matt’s mate Andy Geall from up north and Dave – were a fantastic 15th in the same category. You can take a look at some of the madness for yourself by visiting our online gallery… http://tinyurl.com/56s3tl …but for now, let’s take a sojourn in the relatively sane world of stage racing. It’s time for a Dynamo double…

THE MAILLOT JAUNTS
+++ Two stage wins and GC triumph for Dynamo +++
Victory in the opening eight-mile time trial, courtesy of GUY ‘THE ENGINE’ POWDRILL, followed by RICHARD ‘AV IT’ HOULT taking 1st place in the next day’s road stage meant that this year’s Pearson Jaunts 5-Day event provided the platform for one of Dynamo’s best-ever performances in a stage race – and the Dynamatic domination of the Surrey League showdown was cemented by Rich easily topping the final GC thanks to the time gap secured by his victory on Saturday. That, fellas, is Dyn-amazing stuff! On the day that RICHARD ‘PLACING’ MASON took 4th, have-a-go Hoult pulled on the yellow jersey after riding across to the leader and soloing to the chequered flag in Bletchingly almost a minute ahead of him. The third stage on Sunday saw the ‘Mos pull back a long Dulwich Paragon break on the Ockley circuit before Mason and Powdrill took 2nd and 3rd respectively on the super-tough off-course Leith Hill finish. Guy ended up taking 3rd place overall… http://tinyurl.com/3sea4y …but disappointment was provided by the pesky puncture fairy, who stuck her beak into one of Rich Mason’s tyres before he had made it out of the neutralised zone on the final day – and he never joined the race on the Ladies Mile circuit due to traffic. Oh cruel, cruel fate! Tester RICHARD ‘WIN ‘EM’ SIMMONDS added to one of the most successful weeks in Dynamo history and rounded off his national champs season in the process by landing 11th place at the RTTC Championship ’50’ in Dishforth, North Yorks. The TT master clocked 01:45:48 on Sunday… http://tinyurl.com/4yjx7d …while his missus finished 10th in the women’s competition with an impressive time of 2:00:38… http://tinyurl.com/4yjx7d. Have a well-deserved rest, both of you!

MEAT YOUR MATCH
+++ Streule gets £95 burger in bet deal +++
Like an urban Superman, investment banker DAVID ‘DORIAN’ STREULE was recently seen performing an ultra-fast change from business suit to baggy shorts as he transformed himself into Captain Courier for three peckish workpals who fancied trying out – we kid you not – a hamburger costing just under a hundred notes… http://tinyurl.com/6qpumf. The big-spending trio bet each other on whether Dave could cycle from their firm’s Fleet Street HQ to Burger King’s Gloucester Road branch in less than 18 minutes and guaranteed he would get a free burger whether he made it in the designated time or not. Those who know speedy Streule won’t be surprised to learn that he completed the trip in 13 minutes – and equally unsurprisingly, he reports that the taste experience was “nice, but I wouldn’t pay £95 for it”. So you could say it was hardly worth the time and truffles! Speaking of unusual sartorial transformations, which we were at the beginning of this item, it seems that Streuley’s former colleague GUY ‘THE ENGINE’ POWDRILL ran the risk of being sectioned on Sunday night when he wandered shoeless along the streets of Morden and caught a Tube dressed in just his socks and Dynamo kit. It turns out that the hapless big fella’s car keys had jumped out of his back pocket during the third stage of the 5-Day, prompting him to cadge a lift from race organiser Gary Pearson, who dumped underdressed Guysie on the streets of south London – but despite the stares from passers-by, he made it back to his flat in the Oval in one piece. Tuck your keys in your Sidis next time, buddy!

…AND A FEW ‘MO THINGS…
+++ REBECCA ‘WHIRLIGIG’ CURLEY 3rd and SUSANNAH ‘GUNDOLA’ OSBORNE 8th in Women’s Series Twickenham event on Windlesham circuit… http://tinyurl.com/6rkvx8 +++ TOM ‘HUMBLE’ HEMMANT 2nd at Crystal Palace E/1/2 race on Tuesday, with IAN ‘KING OF’ PAINE taking 10th… http://tinyurl.com/5e9r32 +++

DEVONSHIRE CREAMED
+++ Hoult leads Dynamo charge of Certini Tor podium +++
The much-loved DYNAMITE! ticker tape machine has been in danger of overheating during the past few months due to the best-ever crop of dazzling Dynamo results chugging out of its varnished oaken shell – and the poor, battered appliance began to take another pounding this week as news of SUSANNAH ‘GUNDOLA’ OSBOURNE and REBECCA ‘WHIRLIGIG’ CURLEY’s achievements at the women’s Nationals was piped into our famous soundproof bunker. Just seven months after taking up cycling, Rebecca finished 20th at the hilly 74-mile event in Duncombe Park, North Yorks, while Susannah took 19th… http://tinyurl.com/6b3vfx …and around the same time in Padworth, Berks, club founding father PAUL ‘CANNONBALL’ CALLINAN prepared for the forthcoming national 3-up time trial champs by clocking 56:03 at the Newbury RC ’25’, giving him 3rd place. Later that day on SERRL’s Lingfield circuit, Dynamo boss and former 1st cat TONY ‘PEETEER’ SMEDLEY checked himself out of the 3rd cat hotel by taking the No.3 spot at the tough 2/3/4 regional ‘A’ race in Edenbridge, Kent… http://tinyurl.com/633hdo …and down in Devon, fellow upgrader RICHARD ‘AV IT’ HOULT proudly stood on the 2nd step of the Certini Tor 2-Day podium, which also saw GUY ‘THE ENGINE’ POWDRILL take 3rd overall thanks to his 2nd place in the opening 63-mile stage and 3rd in the following four-mile time trial. Great work, fellas! Achieving 1st cat status less than six weeks after starting as a 3rd, red-hot Rich won the TT, took 7th on stage one and 6th on the final stage, despite nursing a cold from last week’s 5-Day – but according to his Tor chum JOE ‘BLOW’ HEMMANT, the UBS sensation and “resting” City boy Guy would have been 1st and 2nd respectively on the final GC had they reaped the time bonuses on offer during each lap of the last stage. Joe quips: “Is it the first time these pinstriped wonders have been on the wrong side of our busted bonus culture?” The Dynamo trip to Dartmoor was topped off by minibus driver MARTIN ‘PIN-UP’ WILLIAMSON winning the first stage and taking home £50 for best-placed 3rd cat… http://tinyurl.com/5lfy6z …while comeback kid DAVID ‘PINKY’ GARDNER used Ireland’s best liquid black magic to supplement the recovery drinks kindly donated by For Goodness Shakes chief STUART ‘POSTAL’ JEFFREYS. And speaking of recoveries, the Dynamo committee is putting together a bash to help all of you take a breather during the most hectic season the club has yet seen – so all you have to do is come with us now as we give you the details. It’s a pizza cake…

COIN AND GET IT
+++ Back to the Guinea for summer social +++
As many ‘Mos begin their frantic search for a bike box to transport their precious machines to the GF Pinarello in northern Italy, dedicated social secretary PAUL ‘ALL BLUE’ HARKNETT has been busy organising an after-sportive wind-down for those taking part and any other ‘Mos who might want to hang out with their favourite Dynamates on a summer’s evening. Everyone is invited to join this year’s Summer Social which takes place on Thursday 31 July at the Guinea pub on Bruton Place, W1, near Green Park Tube… http://tinyurl.com/5fwlg9 …so leave a post on Paul’s thread… http://tinyurl.com/6hpmm6 …if you’ll be popping along to the traditional mid-year venue. The evening starts at 6pm with a table booked for pizzas at 8:30pm – and we’ll be there with the DYNAMITE! box brownie. So behave yourselves!

WALL GONE WRONG
+++ Cyclefit boss ‘chooses’ 10th place +++
This edition wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the strong Dynamo presence on the syntactically-challenged Crystal Palace results sheet, headed by TOM ‘HEMNANT’ HEMMANT’s 2nd place in Tuesday’s E/1/2 race following a tumble that later prompted 4th-placed IAN ‘KING OF’ PAINE to snap the damage… http://tinyurl.com/6e8pfu. Oof! The last three places in the top 10 were taken by RICHARD ‘PLACING’ MASON, PAUL ‘MONTY’ DELAHUNTY and DAVID ‘DORIAN’ STREULE respectively, while CHARLIE ‘VICI’ BLACKMAN once again won the women’s race which also saw duathlete dazzler JENNY ‘J-LLOYD’ JONES take 3rd. But even more intriguing than Streuley being turned into “Straw” and Delahunty’s name getting a French makeover on the results list, it seems comeback crit vet JULIAN ‘WONDER’ WALL has been listed as 10th in the 3/4 race… http://tinyurl.com/5uut9r …after a rare lapse of concentration from the clipboard and Dictaphone crew. The Etape-bound Cyclefitter, who has been battling his way back to fitness this year, nonchalantly admits: “They were asking who came 10th and I knew I was there or thereabouts, so I volunteered my name.” As londoncylesport.com notes: “The bottom order is subject to possible change”. Fingers crossed it doesn’t, Jules!

…AND A FEW ‘MO THINGS
+++ At the Chertsey MoD women’s race on Saturday, JENNY ‘J-LLOYD’ JONES takes 5th, NAOMI ‘JUDGE’ ANDERSON finishes 8th and CLAIRE BEAUMONT is 10th… http://tinyurl.com/5qfhhz +++ TOBY ‘IS IT COS I IS’ BLACKMAN 7th in MoD 3rds… http://tinyurl.com/5w5c2a +++ PAUL ‘MONTY’ DELAHUNTY 11th in E/1/2 race… http://tinyurl.com/55mrsb +++

TICKERED OFF
The ticker tape results box is noisily winding down, which means there’s just enough time to thank everyone who sent stuff in for this issue before we turn it off.
